THE EDGES OF TIMEBy Kay Ryan
It is at the edges That time thins. Time, which had been Dense and viscous as amber suspending intentions like bees unseizes them. A humming begins, apparently coming from stacks of put-off things or This Story just in back. A racket of claims now, as time flattens. A glittering fan of things competing to happen, brilliant and urgent as fish when seas retreat. |
I chose this poem because of its meaning, which was that time goes by fast. I know that this is the meaning because of the quotes. One of the lines “a racket of claims now as time flattens” supports this idea. Kay Ryan is saying that everyone is talking about the end of time and remembering the past. I also saw Kay Ryan used figurative language to express her idea. She used similes like “as fish in the seas” to express the idea that time is brilliant and urgent. She also uses enjambment to make a point and then support it. She separates “time which has been” and “ dense and viscous so you think about her word choice . I love this poem because she uses enjambment to make you think about her word choice.
