The Sun-Dial
by Adelaide Crapsey
Every day, Every day, Tell the hours By their shadows, By their shadows. |
I usually like longer poems because they enable the writer to add meaning and figurative language that they could not use in a short poem. However, this poem is an exception. This poem didn’t use a lot of figurative language, but the author used repetition to show how the sundial’s shadow goes around in a circle as time goes on. I think the author was trying to say that time goes by slowly when things seem repetitive. I could tell because the writer used repetition to make it sound like he was droning on and on. The writer of this poem also uses enjambment to separate each line so he is able to use repetition. You can see this when he separates the two “By their shadows” lines. This poem is excellent because the author uses a combination of repetition and enjambment to show how time goes by.
