When You are OldBy W. B. Yeats
When you are old and grey and full of sleep, And nodding by the fire, take down this book, And slowly read, and dream of the soft look Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep; How many loved your moments of glad grace, And loved your beauty with love false or true, But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you, And loved the sorrows of your changing face; And bending down beside the glowing bars, Murmur, a little sadly, how Love fled And paced upon the mountains overhead And hid his face amid a crowd of stars. |
W.B . Yeats wrote this poem to remember the past. The third line, “ And slowly read, and dream of soft look” helped me figure out the meaning of this poem . This line means when you are old you will think about when you were younger. W.B. Yeats also uses a ton of figurative language to express his point. He uses personification in the line “Murmur, a little sadly, how love fled” where he is talking about divorce or the death of his spouse. Love cannot flee. W. B. Yeats uses imagery in the line “ Your eyes once, and of their shadows deep”. I love this poem because of mainly because the figurative language it clearly expresses his point.
